Studying Abroad in Canada as a University Student

To study in Canada at university you will need to secure a student visa. This will likely be more challenging than choosing your desired course and University, but is a necessary step to secure your legality. Your application must be accompanied by the following documents

  • The application for the student visa
  • Information about your family
  • Declaration of status of marriage
  • A valid passport
  • Letter of acceptance from your chosen university
  • Evidence of fees paid
  • Any additional documents specified at the time of application

It is also a crucial part of the application process to be able to prove that you will be able to financially support yourself. The proof of funds requires students to be able to show they have up to $25,000 to support themselves and their application.

This is not optional, but students may have a sponsor who can provide their own bank statements and a letter of support. A sponsor can be a parent, an employer, a friend, or a partner.

Depending on your nationality, you may also be asked to complete an interview, which will cover various topics, including the type of universities you are applying to, whether you have been to Canada before, and more.

Studying Abroad in Canada as a Secondary School Student

A large number of international Canadian high school students come from China, second only to Indian students. One of the reasons why Canada is such a popular choice for international students is because of the clear pathway to permanent residency after graduation.

Despite the large number of international students from China, there are occasionally issues with integration. These issues mostly surround the culture shock of arriving in Canada, as well as the difference in academics. If a student can overcome these issues however, they are promised a rich resume of

  • Language Skills
  • A western diploma
  • Ambition
  • Determination and Adaptability

While many Chinese international students do choose to return home after they graduate, these skills stay with them throughout their careers and are undeniably beneficial, setting them above the pack when it comes to their careers.

How to Apply for a Canadian International Place

The application process for secondary school students tends to be somewhat easier than that of university applications. To apply for an international secondary school visa you will need the following

  • Your school history for the previous 3 years
  • A copy of your passport
  • A completed application form
  • A declaration of your eligibility

The academic standards for students who wish to complete secondary school in Canada are lower than that for university. It may vary but generally only a passing grade is required- around 50%. However, there is a minimum standard of English or French language skills that are required.

An application is still valid if it is submitted without a language test, but if the application is accepted then the student will need to complete the language test online. If a student does not achieve a passing grade in their test then they may be required to complete an ESL course, either before arrival or alongside their studies.

Applying to study abroad as an international student may seem intimidating, but Canada is widely considered to produce some of the best educated students and young adults on the planet.

Canadian School Policies

Canada is a very large country, and different provinces have different policies when it comes to schools. Some provinces have middle schools, while others do not. Others start earlier, and others finish later. This all depends on the province you will be studying in, so be sure to research further.

While secondary school is free in Canada, international students are expected to pay tuition each year. This can range between $8,000 CAD and $14,000 CAD, depending on the school and the province. This does not include extra costs such as school lunches, stationary, and school trips.

For example, in Ontario, students attend secondary school, and in order to graduate they must also complete a number of assessments, such as the OSSLT- a literacy test designed to test the skills of students in grade 10 or 11. You can learn more about the OSSLT and how to study for it here.

Closing Thoughts…

There are many reasons why studying in Canada as an international student can be intimidating, scary, and overwhelming. Choosing the right course and school is an extremely important decision and can define your future, so make sure that you take your time to choose the right course and school for you.

Choosing a school that has an international program can help to ensure that you adjust more easily than you may otherwise. Schools that have a language program attached can be a good idea, as it will allow students to improve their academics in line with their language skills.
